Coloplast Men’s Health Surgical Skills Workshop: A Weekend of Learning and Innovation

This past weekend, Perito Urology had the honor of hosting the Coloplast Men’s Health Surgical Skills Workshop, an intensive two-day event dedicated to advancing the expertise of future leaders in penile implant surgery. Designed for residents and fellows eager to refine their skills, the workshop provided an invaluable opportunity to learn from some of the most respected names in the field of men’s health.

An Evening of Education and Engagement

The weekend commenced on Friday evening with a private dinner and educational program at Perito Urology. In an intimate and collaborative setting, participants engaged in high-level discussions about the latest advancements in penile implant surgery, best practices, and patient care. This was an opportunity not only to absorb knowledge but also to interact with experts who have dedicated their careers to refining surgical techniques and improving patient outcomes.

Dr. Paul Perito, led the discussions alongside an esteemed faculty of distinguished urologists, including:

  • Rafael Carrion, MD – USF Health, Tampa, FL
  • Melissa Mendez, MD – Chesapeake Urology, Silver Spring, MD
  • Anand Shridharani, MD – UT Erlanger Urology, Chattanooga, TN
  • Jaspreet Singh, DO – Premier Medical Group, New Windsor, NY

These thought leaders shared their experiences, surgical pearls, and insights into optimizing patient outcomes in penile prosthetic surgery. The evening set the tone for what would be an immersive and hands-on learning experience the following day.

Hands-On Training at The M.A.R.C. Institute

On Saturday morning, the group reconvened at The M.A.R.C. Institute, a premier bioskills training facility located in Doral, Florida. Known for its state-of-the-art surgical labs, The M.A.R.C. Institute provided an ideal environment for hands-on surgical training using cadaveric models, allowing residents and fellows to practice and refine their techniques under expert guidance.

The focus of the cadaver lab was penile prosthesis implantation, an essential procedure for restoring sexual function in men suffering from erectile dysfunction. Throughout the morning, participants had the rare opportunity to receive direct instruction from Dr. Perito and his esteemed co-faculty, gaining invaluable experience with the infrapubic approach and other surgical methodologies.

From surgical exposure to cylinder placement and reservoir positioning, the workshop covered every intricate detail of the procedure, ensuring that attendees left with a heightened level of confidence in their surgical abilities. Each faculty member worked closely with the residents and fellows, providing personalized feedback and hands-on mentorship that will serve them well as they progress in their medical careers.
