Setting the Record Straight About Penile Enhancement

Penile enhancement

Penile enhancement is a growing business (no pun intended). Unfortunately, as an industry, it is rife with unqualified providers and unsafe products that cast a shadow over legitimate, tested, and effective techniques.

I was recently quoted in an article in The New Yorker about silicon implants and other techniques that promise to enhance the length – and girth – of the penis. The overall message is that the overwhelming majority of them can lead to disfigurement, pain, numbness, infection, and a host of other side effects.

Here are a few takeaways:

  • There is currently no safe, scientifically proven method to lengthen the penis. There would be rejoicing in the streets if there was a safe and effective method to provide men with their desired penis length. There simply isn’t a procedure that can accomplish this. What we do know, however, is that both penile length and girth diminish with erectile dysfunction, and that it’s possible to enhance girth safely when performed by a qualified provider.

  • Cosmetic practitioners aren’t always medical experts. It takes years of education and training to become a doctor. It takes even longer to become a surgeon, and even more than that to become a urologic surgeon. This experience is crucial to be able to administer any kind of procedure, cosmetic or otherwise, in a safe and effective manner.

  • Penile implants aren’t cosmetic devices. Prosthetic implants are a surgical option for men with erectile dysfunction or an inability to have a penetrating penis. Many men who find that medication isn’t sufficient to provide or restore penile function opt for implants, not out of vanity, but to be able to maintain a regular level of sexual performance.
