I am a urologist from New Orleans, Louisiana and have been doing penile implants for over 30 years. I was trained by Dr. Brantly Scott in the late 1970's and thought I knew all there was to know about implant surgery. I could easily do the procedure in 60 minutes and had the same success rate and complications as reported in the literature. I heard about a doctor in Florida who could do an implant in 15 minutes. My initial reaction was "That's impossible!" I then viewed Dr. Perito's video about his entirely new surgical approach, but still didn't believe the 15-minute operating time. More out of curiosity than desire to change my 30 year-old habit, I went to Cora Gables to watch Dr. Perito. He arranged for me to assist him and we did 5 cases in one morning. He did the first one in 17 minutes and he walked me through the next four, which took approximately 20 minutes. He has multiple new techniques that simplify the operation. By just using the artificial erection at the beginning of the case cuts down on corporal dilatation as no Hegar dilators or Dial-Mez-Insert are necessary for the corporal dilation. I was able to bring the technique back to New Orleans and have implemented it in my practice. His procedure taught me that 1.) There is often a better way to perform surgery, which we can learn from each other; and 2.) Even old dogs can learn new tricks!
